As the assisted suicide debate rages on Martin Amis sticks his size 10 foot in it by saying:

"They'll be a population of demented very old people, like an invasion of terrible immigrants, stinking out the restaurants and cafes and shops," he said. "I can imagine a sort of civil war between the old and the young in 10 or 15 years' time.

"There should be a booth on every corner where you could get a martini and a medal."

How vile?

This isn't really what the assisted suicide debate is implying.

Assisted suicide supporters are calling for a change in the law so that family and friends can assist in the suicide of terminally ill patients who are unable to commit suicide on their own. Two high profile cases have hit the headlines in the UK this week as two mothers assisted in the suicide of their dying children. One mother was imprisoned after being found guilty of murder while the other walked free. Both claim they acted on compassionate grounds and having read the details it is incredible that anyone could suggest otherwise.

Here is a cartoon where the OAP's show Martin Amis what they think of his Euthanasia booths!

I watched a movie recently with suicide booths in it...what was it, some comedy...Ah, it was a Futurama episode.

Could it be that the U.K. is playing catch up to the U.S., where we have been having this debate for years, since the Jack Kevorkian, "Dr. Death" days of the 1990s, until he was jailed for murder in 1999, and the Supreme Court ruled that we don't have a right to kill ourselves. Kind of odd to think that any authority can tell you that you can't end your own life. Still, it's a gruesome thought, and a gruesome profession Kevorkian chose.

I agree, nothing terrifies me more than the thought of not being able to end my own life due to infirmity etc. and lying in agony, moment after moment, day in, day out. Awful. We don't treat animals this way.

"What is your opinion of assisted suicide?"

*** Good topic to bring up Leah. My Mom died in "95" due to Lou Gehrig's disease, and she said she thought assisted suicide should be a " personal decision and right.    I agree!

There are two types of debates: One is when two sides have equally powerful arguments and points. The other is when one side says, "I have a right to decide for myself," and the dictatorial opposition, imposing its will says, "No, we will decide for you!"   In other words, in the latter there is no debate.  It only becomes a matter when people who love to control others get involved.

In the UK they're saying that they prefer 'care to killing' (odd given abortion rates over here) and they fear that the law would be abused by those caring for the terminally ill. But I assume no person would dare put this responsibility in a relative/friends hands unless they trusted them implicitly. They could also make the request of the Gp/Doctor (the law trusts them already) if they worry a friend/relative would abuse the pact. There are ways to resolve this I am sure.
