If you have a blog or website then you can join many of the blogger networking sites that are on the Internet. The two largest are blogcatalog.com and mybloglog.com.

Mybloglog.com
Mybloglog has a new member area and new community area featuring newly registered members and their blogs. If you join their blog communities and add them as a contact you will be the first person they meet and it is likely they will reciprocate. Also your avatar will always be the first one on their list of community members which means that when others visit their page they will also see you...first!

You can join 15 communities daily and you can send 15 messages daily. But you can add (I assume) an unlimited number of new contacts.

Mybloglog.com also has a message system where you can leave public or private messages. The public messages can be viewed by anyone who visits their mybloglog page and private ones just by the author.

Mybloglog also features on their front page 'hot members'. I think that these are members who are active on the site.

Blogcatalog

This blog community is slightly different and not so easy to gain friends or readers or a high profile spot on the site.

One to gain more visibility is to set up or create groups on the site and invite others to join. You can then promote yourself and the blog within the terms of the site. The discussion board also opportunities to do this though you have to be careful. Don't tread on anyones toes as the site is a little cliquey and things can turn sour very quickly.

In terms of whether the time and effort is worth it, as it does take considerable time to achieve a presence on these sites is up to you.

You can monitor your traffic and where it is referred from using a feedjit widget. If the widget reflects lots of traffic from these sites then it's worth it, if not then no.

Friendly and smaller blogger network sites are places like blogcave.com.  If you place a banner of their site on your site, whenever someone clicks it your site tends to feature on their front page!

If you have the time and the endurance they are worth the effort.

Hi Leah. For whatever reason blogs confuse me. I plan on reading a lot more of your articles to see if there is anything there for me. Dumb question alert! Do blogs come into play when promoting your work?

Indeed they do, hence now many online businesses have one!

A regularly updated Google blog will often rank higher in search engines than a website. I offer a blog creation service for a nominal fee if you want one but don't want the aggravation of creating it. You can be ready to go within hours! They are very addictive mind you and fun.

I can't answer that briefly, but basically they are a more effective website if you update the content regularly.
